THE PROCESS: FROM DIGITAL TO ANALOG

At VHS MANIA, we don’t just print covers—we build artifacts. Every tape that leaves Dave’s hands goes through a rigorous multi-step journey to ensure it looks, feels, and plays like a relic from the golden age of video.
1. CURATION & SOURCING
The journey begins with the physical media. We source high-quality, functional VHS tapes that meet our strict playback standards. Every tape is inspected for physical integrity and cleared of dust and debris before it even touches a VCR.
2. THE MASTERING STAGE
To get that unmistakable analog warmth, we record the media to tape using professional-grade equipment. We don’t just “dub” the film; we master it to ensure the tracking is stable and the audio captures the grit and character that digital streaming lacks.
3. DESIGN & ARTWORK
This is where the mania really happens. Dave meticulously designs every sleeve to capture a specific era’s aesthetic. Whether it’s the neon-heavy grid patterns of the mid-80s or the gritty, high-contrast look of a 90s thriller, every pixel is placed to evoke nostalgia. We pay close attention to:
- Authentic Typography: Using the same fonts found on original rental shelf releases.
- Weathering Effects: Optional “shelf wear” and “rental sticker” details for that lived-in look.
- Color Grading: Ensuring the print colors pop with the same intensity as a vintage offset press.
4. ASSEMBLY & HAND-CRAFTING
Once the design is finalized, it is printed on heavy-weight, premium cardstock. We don’t use thin paper; we use material that feels substantial in your hands. Dave then hand-cuts, scores, and folds each sleeve, ensuring a perfect, snug fit for the VHS shell.
5. THE FINAL SEAL
To protect your piece of history, every tape is professionally shrink-wrapped. This isn’t just for aesthetics—it locks in the artwork and protects the sleeve from scuffs and moisture during its journey to your shelf.
6. QUALITY CHECK
Before being bubble-wrapped for shipping, every tape undergoes one final “Quality Control” check. We check the tape spool, verify the sleeve fit, and ensure the shrink-wrap is tight and clear.
